Cougars claw back to .500 with Egerton back behind bench By Jake Courtepatte To say the Schomberg Cougars had a dismal start to the 2014-2015 GMOHL season would be an understatement. Outscored 17-2 through the first three games had the Cougars in an early hole, desperate for offensive production. However, the flood gates have opened for the Cougars both at home and on the road over the last two weeks, with head coach Jim Egerton back in place after a pre-season suspension had him sitting out the first two regular season games. After picking up their first win of the season in Fergus, Schomberg looked to keep the streak going while pleasing the home crowd at the Trisan Centre against the Midland Flyers last Thursday. Schomberg dominated the early play, getting a couple key chances shortly after the opening draw. However, Midland capitalized first, when Ryley Egerton was sent to the box two minutes in on a charging call. Flyer Steven Pickard put one in past goaltender Taylor Ewart thirty seconds later for the early 1-0 lead. The lead wouldn't last for long, as Joseph Mete potted his first of the season less than a minute later on a pass from Liam Spurgeon. Before the end of the period, JP Crescenzi put the home team up 2-1 heading into the break. The offensive pressure continued to mount in the second, as goals from Brandon Yorke and another from Mete made four unanswered for the Cougars. Up 4-1, the team seemed to fall into a defensive trap, albeit with more than half the game remaining. Midland was able to put all their efforts into their offensive attack, incredibly fighting back by scoring four unanswered goals of their own to lead 5-4 with 15 minutes left in the third. A lack of discipline by Midland with time running out gave the Cougars almost a minute-long 5-on-3 half-way through the frame. John Gage picked up his second goal in as many games to tie the game at five, sending the Cougars to overtime for the first time this season. Overtime would solve nothing, leaving the outcome to a shootout. Both goalies were stunning in the shootout, desperate for the extra point. All five of the first shooters were stopped, leaving the game on the stick of Crescenzi, who made no mistake and gave the Cougars the 6-5 win. Mete was a strong force in the game for the Cougars, earning two goals and one assist. Looking to extend the winning streak, Schomberg was in Huntsville Friday night to face off against the Otters. The Cougars' special teams came out strong, picking up two power play goals in the first from Blake Culley and Brandon Yorke. However, in a case of deja-vu, the Otters came fighting back in the second period to tie the game at two. Another power play marker late in the frame by Mitchell Robinson once again put the Cougars on top. An uneventful third period left the Cougars with the 3-2 win, now sitting at .500 for the first time this season with a record of 3-3-0. This Thursday's home game will see the Cougars host the Caledon Golden Hawks, who sit one point behind them in league standings.
