King United honours volunteers with end of season awards Tony Cipressi was awarded the Wayne Lankester Coach of the Year Award. King United Soccer Club paid tribute to its family of volunteers, parents, players and sponsors, who all pitched in to make the 2014 season as success. The club singled out two special individuals who created an environment for their U-12 girls' interclub team, that we as volunteers should all strive to accomplish. “Encouragement, teamwork, development strategies” and “communication” were just some of the words used to describe their season from the parents of their team. Laura Allen brought along her dog named Mac as the team's mascot, who attended almost every practice and game. If you've seen Mac, you know you can't miss him. The girls rallied around Mac. The club recognized the contributions to this team, because in the end, this is what soccer at the grass roots level is all about. This year KUSC made some modifications to programs, primarily in the younger age groups while adding teams and coaches to our already formidable competitive programs. In each situation, the club looks to improve upon previous year's models with the intention of providing area residents with the opportunity to learn about the game of soccer, enhance their skills and abilities, and to have fun playing this wonderful game. Coaches, being on the front lines, are often considered the face of the club and act as ambassadors to the many parents and players within the organization. With the club's philosophies in mind, regardless of level or age, coaches strive for integrity, fairness, commitment, leadership, and a “players first” philosophy. Wayne Lankester espoused these characteristics, and the club to this day endeavors to always maintain the ambitions and dedication he brought to our sport. Wayne was a well-respected member of the community and the award for Coach of the Year is aptly named! This year there were a number of nominations and each on their own could have been chosen as a worthy recipient. However, this year's winner has a combination of longevity within the club, a dedication that has spanned both house league and competitive programs, and honest and truthfulness to him which is truly second to none. The Wayne Lankester Memorial Trophy for Coach of the Year was awarded to Tony Cipressi. He was the inaugural coach of the club's 1999 girls' competitive team, as well as spending countless hours over the years on the pitch and indoors working with various age groups and coaches He led and helped develop an indoor boys program last winter, that could be used as a template for future programs. He was the coach of our 2006 boys Festival team, and has previously been a member of our board, still contributing to the long-term health of the club and its stakeholders. The role of a coach within the Soccer for Life concept is about encouraging skill development through fun activities; providing simple teaching points to help players learn and offering activities that help contribute to an active lifestyle. No one displays a better definition of this while living up to the standards outlined by Wayne than this year's worthy recipient, Tony Cipressi. |
