The Nobleton Cornhuskers senior men's baseball team were in desperate need of win and finally pulled one out in Barrie on Sunday afternoon to halt their losing skid at seven games.
The win gives them a 6-10-2 record on the season and keeps them in a playoff position for the time being.
In Barrie, the team battled the heat and showed the desperation needed to lock down a win.
Scott Traverse started the game for Nobleton and was solid in keeping the Angels offense at bay to give his team a shot.
Kevin Winters earned a walk and a run; Eric McLoughin scored a run and Eric Jones hit a double and scored a run, which was all enough to eke out a 3-2 win.
“It was hot. We got to the pitcher early and made him throw a lot of pitches,” Jones said postgame. “Now we need to keep chipping away. It's a team game and we all need to contribute for us to win.”
Earlier in the week, the Cornhuskers played host to the last place Orangeville Giants on Thursday night.
It was a game that the ‘Huskers should have had, but the Giants got on them early by tagging starting pitcher Trevor Berriault with seven runs in the first two innings.
The Cornhuskers started to come back with Traverse in to toe the rubber in the third inning. Steve Scobie hit a double back to the fence in the third inning, but his teammates failed to advance him.
Eventually the offence started to come around, as Mike Leclef was brought home by Kevin Winters and then McLaughin made his way around the bases to make it 7-2.
Then in the bottom of the fifth, the Cornhuskers made things interesting. Scobie led off the inning by reaching first base on a deep single and he was advanced to second on a hit by Lance McCormick.
That's when Mike Leclef smacked his second home run of the season over the fence in left field to put the score at 8-5.
“It always feels good anytime you hit the ball square enough to get it over,” Leclef said of his home run. “It's a bit of a short fence here, so you've got to take advantage of it when you can.”
Nobleton tried to chip away at the lead for the final few innings, but were forced to accept the 8-5 loss.
At the plate, this weren't so bad. Leclef went 3-4, Scobie 3-3, Kevin Winters went 2-3 with a double and McCormick went 2 -3.
The Cornhuskers pitching has taken a hit with the some injuries this season, but Leclef said he feels the team is starting to pull things together for a push into the playoffs.
“Pitching has been a bit of a problem like last year,” he said. “But our defense has tightened up and our offence is getting better, so if our pitching starts coming around, we'll be a pretty good team.”
The Cornhuskers now have the opportunity to turn things around and start a win streak of their own when they host the Clearview Orioles on Friday night at Nobleton Sports Park and then visit the Bolton Dodgers on Sunday.
