Cougars extend winning streak

By Jeff Doner

Since being spanked 8-2 at home on Sept. 19, the Schomberg Cougars have been on a torrid pace that has them on a six-game win streak and vaulting them into first place in their division.
In their two games last week, the Cougars scored 13 goals, but they in turn allowed seven.
Starting with a 9-5 win over the Erin, the Cougars came out guns a blazing to give them a 3-0 lead. Brandon Falsarella, Nicholas Chaykowsky and Mitch Safaric scored first period goals for the Cougars.
Erin pulled to within one goal in the second period on a power play goal by Adam Gibson, but the Cougars scored another flurry of goals to take an 8-2 lead heading into the third period.
John Gage potted two in the period and Chaykowsky and Falsarella both netted their second goals in the game. The speedy Ryley Egerton also scored for the Cougars.
With a commanding lead over the Shamrocks, all the Cougars needed to do was shut the door, but after scoring their ninth of the game, they allowed their opponents to get two more on the scoreboard.
Cougars' assistant coach, Doug Taylor said he would have liked to see his team play a more complete 60 minutes.
“We definitely did let off the pedal a little bit,” he said post-game. “The nine goals are great, but the five goals are unacceptable, especially if we're going to try and stay at the top of this league; especially if we're going to keep up with the big teams.”
He added that with the offence ticking and solid goaltending coming from Taylor Ewart and Garett Taylor, the team needs to shift more focus on the defence.
“In a game like this, we have to keep both sides of the scoreboard in mind – not just going up the ice and trying to score, but keeping them out, too. We need to practice on that part of it, so when we play the really good teams it's a natural thing for us.”
Second-year Cougar John Gage, said the game started to get a little chippy as Erin tried to claw their way back into the game and agreed with his coach that there is still some work to do.
“In the third, we slowed down a lot for sure,” he said. “They started to put it to us, scored a couple goals, started to take some of the momentum and they were on us, but we stuck through it and kept it going and came out with two points.”
Chaykowsky, who has had a great start to the season, was a tad more blunt with how he felt about the game against Erin.
“We feel alright … we aren't really satisfied with tonight's game,” he said. “We kind of played down to Erin's level and we didn't really play how we can and the score was reflective of how we played – we shouldn't have let that many goals in and we kind of let our goalie down.”
The Cougars did leave Ewart out to dry with the team taking a string of unnecessary penalties in the second and third periods.
Despite allowing five goals, Ewart looked sturdy in net making 28 saves on 33 shots.

Cougars dump Orillia

After shelling Erin's goalie with nearly 50 shots earlier in the week, the Cougars once again took the puck hard to Orillia's goalie, Gordie Weiss, registering 52 shots.
Falsarella opened the scoring in the first period to give the Cougars a lead. Orillia tied it up 1-1 shortly after, but the Cougars' 21 shots in the period eventually tired the Orillia goalie, which led to Schomberg goals by Kiefer McIntosh and Justin Formenton to put the Cougars up 3-1 going into the second.
Orillia's Josh Allen made the score 3-2 at 7:06, but Blake Culley replied for the Cougars 17 seconds later to restore the Cougars' two-goal cushion.
This time the Cougars were more successful in shutting down their opponent and locking down a 4-2 win. The towering Garett Taylor was also strong in goal for the Cougars, facing 36 Orillia shots.
Chaykowsky said despite their perch at the top of the standings, the team still has a lot of work to put in to stay there.
“We have to work harder in practices, which will help us have better games,” he said. “We also have to play 100 per cent every game, no matter what team it is. Alliston goes out and they kill teams like this, we've beat Alliston, but we don't kill teams like this. We're not there yet.”
