The streak has them currently sitting in second place in their division behind Penetang, who they beat 4-3 in the shootout at home last Thursday night. The Cougars found themselves down early in the game due to a power play goal by Matt Fischer, with Cougar Ryley Egerton in the penalty box. Once at even strength, Penetang was looking to strike again, but was denied by veteran goalie Taylor Ewart, who made some key saves to keep his team in the game. The Cougars created multiple chances to score, but were unable to finish until Brandon Yorke fired a rebound past Penetang goalie Adam Redgate to tie things up. However, Penetang was craving the lead and took it back before the first period ended. In the second, Ewart once again made some big saves for the Cougars, which gave his team the confidence they needed to tie things up on a goal by Brandon Falsarella at 8:44. Just five minutes later, the Cougars captured a lead for the first time in the game, with Chris Wilson finishing off a chance that was created on a blast from the point. With the Kings pressing, Bobby Quinn sacrificed his body to block a shot late to help preserve the lead. The third was evenly played, until a power play miscue for the Cougars led to a shorthanded goal for Penetang to tie the score at 3-3. Matt Fischer was credited with the goal, his second of the game, which he scored by flipping the puck over Ewart's shoulder. The score would remain tied after an entertaining third period, sending the game into overtime and eventually the shootout. Cougar Brandon Yorke was the only shooter to score in the shootout to seal the Cougars first home win of the season. “It felt really good,” Yorke said after the game. “The ice was pretty bad, so we wanted to get him (Redgate) moving side to side and when he went down we tried to pull, but a couple of the guys lost the puck or poke checked, but in the end one went in and that's all that counts.” Egerton said his team started to look a little sluggish heading into overtime. “The guys started to look a little tired out there and we had a couple guys kicked out of the game and that made the bench a little shorter, but we're learning our systems and we're competing and giving ourselves the chance to win every night, so what else can you ask for?” He also recalled at least one key moment in the game where his team seemed to wake up. “I think killing that penalty in the third was pretty large (five on three) and then coming back and scoring a goal, I know they tied it up, but it went into the shootout, which we worked on in practice and Yorke actually won the shootout in practice the other night and won a stick,” Egerton said. Cougars dump Huntsville Feeling good atop the league standings, the Cougars headed north to face the Huntsville Otters on Sunday. For the most part, it was a one-sided affair with the Cougars shelling Otters goalie Connor Christianson with 40 shots in the 3-0 shutout win. Ewart was the man in net for the Cougars and picked up the shutout by turning away 24 shots. Ryley Egerton got the Cougars on board in the first, while veteran John Gage connected on the power play in both the second and third period to give the Cougars all the offence they would need. Things also got chippy as the game went on, with Huntsville racking up 48 minutes of penalties to Schomberg's 38 minutes. Looking ahead, Yorke said he is pleased with the way his team is coming together to get a good start. “I have a great feeling about this year,” he said. “I think we're going to be a very strong team. We're not going to be scared to play other teams; they're going to be scared to play us this year, because they know we're not giving up.” The Cougars return home and will try to keep their winning streak alive against Erin on Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. at the Trisan Centre in Schomberg.
