Royals make soccer club history with victories

The King City Royals U12 girls team of the King United Soccer Club had a very successful 2013 outdoor season. Playing in the Central Girls Soccer League Level 4-1A Division the Royals battled for 14 regular season games to win the Division Championship and earn promotion to the Premier Level for the 2014 outdoor season.
The girls had achieved their primary objective for the season and then set their sights on the next prize – the League Cup.  With 16 teams vying for the Cup, the competition was fierce.
After winning the first two rounds of the Cup, the Royals traveled to Port Perry on a rainy Saturday to play a determined Whitby team that was undefeated in league play.
The Royals opened the scoring early in the game and despite several near misses on goal went to the half with only a 1-0 lead.  Whitby was not to be held off of the scoresheet and scored in the second half to tie the game up 1-1.  After several furious exchanges between the two teams, the game ended in a tie and went right to penalty kicks to decide the semifinal winner. Five players from each team were selected to go one on one with their opponents' keeper.
The two teams exchanged goals until Whitby's fourth shot was denied by King City's keeper who made a glorious save to give the Royals the advantage leading up to the fifth penalty shot. The Royals' player calmly spotted the ball, took 3 paces backward, and made an excellent strike into the right corner of the net to win the game 2-1 and send the team to the Cup finals to face the Richmond Hill Raiders.
On Sunday, the Royals returned to Port Perry to face the Richmond Hill Raiders in the League Cup final.
The King United team played the first half into a very strong wind that helped a determined Raiders team hem the Royals up for much of the first half. The game went to the half tied 0-0.
The Royals were reminded at the half that they were on the throes of making King United Soccer Club history by capturing both the League Cup and Division Championship.
With less than 15 minutes to play a King City player took a shot just outside the box and deflected off the crossbar where a Royals' striker volleyed the rebound into the back of the net to go up 1-0. The Raiders, down by one goal, and only minutes remaining pressed to get the equalizer, but a tough defence and fortified midfield denied the Raiders any opportunities for goal.
The Royals captured the League Cup and claimed their place in King United Soccer Club history as the first team to win the Division Championship and League Cup in one season.
The 2013 outdoor season was an extremely rewarding journey.  The girls continued to develop their soccer skills as players and learned how to win as a team. The journey towards their next objective, the CGSL Premier Championship, begins now as tryouts are under way to form the King City Royals U13G indoor team.
