Acclaimed artist Helen Lucas welcomes the public to her studio show

By Mark Pavilons
Helen Lucas is passionate about a great many things.
The internationally renowned artist, known for her large floral canvasses, is welcoming the public into her inner sanctum.
Visitors will get a chance to see and purchase Lucas's works, during her spring studio show and sale that runs Saturday and Sunday, June 8 and 9. The show runs 1-5 p.m. each day at her home studio, 14210 7th Concession.
Her last public appearance was a well attended fundraising show and talk at St. Alban's Anglican Church in Nobleton. Residents and fans of her work got a chance to hear from the animated and humorous Lucas.
Lucas is best known for her large, beautiful floral works, which adorned galleries in North America and Europe until the mid-1990s.
Her originals, as well as prints and small framed pieces, will be offered over the two-day event. Most art lovers are impressed by Lucas's subject matter and sheer size of her creations. She enjoys speaking to people about the stories behind her work.
Lucas paints not only for herself, but for others to appreciate.
She began drawing at a young age to “get attention” and found it easy to draw and paint. It's a matter of developing the right side of the brain, she attests.
“I need to do this (paint),” she said. “I need to show them.”
Art evokes emotion and the only way it can do this is by being experienced.
At 81, despite aches and pains, she shows no signs of slowing down. “I can't see me not working,” she said.
It's passion and spirituality that continues to move and inspire her.
“I love it when a painting hits you,” she says with a smile.
