Cornhuskers notch two wins in North Dufferin league

By Jeff Doner
The Nobleton Cornhuskers senior baseball team is climbing back up in the North Dufferin Baseball League standings after two big wins on the weekend against the Angus Black Sox and the Lisle Astros.
The Cornhuskers now sit with an improved record of 3–4–1 in a young season already plagued with multiple rain delays.
“I think we're doing good and we're holding our own,” said player/coach Eric Jones. “We've stayed in every game; it has just been one bad inning each game that breaks it open for the other team. A lot of us have played together for a lot of years, so we all know how one another plays and what to expect.”
Saturday's game against Angus was cut to five innings due to rain, but it was enough for the Cornhuskers to nail down a 7-1 win at Nobleton Sports Park.
Jones, also an outfielder, pitched a complete five innings on the mound for his team to earn the win.
The only blip in his game was allowing a solo home run to Kyle Warren in the top of the fourth.
Steve Scobie and Jeff Pyne helped lead the offence for the Cornhuskers, with Scobie going three for four with a double and two singles and Pyne connecting on a double in the third inning to get some runs on the scoreboard.
“We don't have one power hitter; we are all pretty solid at the plate though. The diamond that we play at might be good for us, because someone can hit it over the fence and feel good. It's only 280 down the line. But a bunch of us contributed in a team effort today,” Jones said.
On Sunday the Cornhuskers took to the road to face the Lisle Astros and once again the bats were hot in a 12-8 win.
Mike Winters got the start for the Cornhuskers and pitched the first four innings, but Steve Scobie registered the win in relief.
Cornhusker Kyle Hall faced his old team for the first time and came out with a RBI single in the fourth.
Dave Carrotte then came up with a big hit to drive in Hall and tie the game 5-5 in the top of the fourth inning.
Eric McLoughin started off a solid fifth inning for the Cornhuskers with a double, who was then brought home by Eric Jones to put the Cornhuskers up 6-5.
Lisle would score two in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead by one run, but the Cornhuskers were unwilling to let the game get away from them and stuck it to the Astros in the seventh inning.
Then, up 12-8, Scobie shut the door to end the game.
“It was a close game throughout the whole game and then in the seventh I hit a double to bring in two runs and then Jeff Pyne brought in another two runs,” said Jones.  “Mike Winters pitched really well. He only went four innings, but they were four strong innings and didn't give up a run until the third inning and Steve Scobie added to his hitting streak.”
Jones, who also had four RBIs on Sunday, was enthusiastic about the play of his team over the weekend and said the Cornhuskers are finally starting to gel in their first season in the NDBL.
“We're just pulling through right now, we were a little shaky at the beginning of the season, but we're coming together and it looks like it's turning out to be a pretty good season,” he said.
“We've got to get ‘Ws' as much as we can. Every game is a must win for us at this point and we have to beat the teams that we know we can beat and just have to stop giving games away.”
The Cornhuskers will look to keep the momentum going strong on Saturday when they play two games at Nobleton Sports Park against the Creemore Braves and Ivy Leafs at 1 and 3:30 p.m.
