Pageant contestant shares her passion for the environment

By Mark Pavilons

It's the rare beauty of our planet that has sparked a passion in a local ambassador.
Nobleton's Bianca Catracchia will represent Toronto in the Miss Earth Canada pageant that will take place in Montreal this August. She finished as second runner-up at the Miss Earth Ontario pageant in March and has some newfound passion about spreading the word.
A pageant contestant since she was 18, Catracchia, 23, is enthusiastic about this event and the cause it represents.
She's been a hands-on advocate, helping the next generation learn about the importance of the environment, recycling, our landfill situation and the need to reduce our use of plastic bottles.
“There are no words to express how passionate I am about this,” she said.
Recently she's been involved with a cleanup event, tree planting and increasing awareness of organic composting.
The pageants, she said, are much more than glitz and glamour. They are a means for young women to build camaraderie, friendships for life and self-esteem. In this “sisterhood,” many become ambassadors and spokespeople for various causes.
And Catracchia hopes to “change the face of pageants” with her own message. Building self-esteem among girls and young women is paramount and being a messenger of change  is “what it's all about.”
Catracchia is currently in a whirlwind of activity and May brings a couple of fundraising events for charities that include Junior Achievement, Operation Smile and SOS Children's Villages.
Catracchia said she tries to give back as much as she can. She currently volunteers at St. James Catholic elementary school in Woodbridge and addresses the important issue of bullying to young children.
She's studying business and human resources at Seneca College and is involved in the college's Student Mentoring In Life and Education (SMILE) program, which guides newcomers and helps them settle down into college life and provides them with the motivation they need to succeed.
Catracchia has some other prestigious accolades to her credit, including competing in Miss Universe Canada and Miss World Canada events.
