Bathurst work offers improvements

By Mark Pavilons
York Region officially re-opened Bathurst Street in northern King, after improvements were made to this stretch of road.
Officials, including York chair Wayne Emmerson and King Councillor Avia Eek, were on hand for a brief ceremony last week.
The reconnection of Bathurst Street provides better travel options for users, including:
• An additional lane, allowing slower traffic to climb uphill without slowing other traffic down.
• Intersection improvements at Green Lane West, Morning Sideroad and Highway 11.
• Better slope of the road.
• 5.1 kilometres of new road pavement.
• New drainage and wildlife crossing structures, allowing animals to cross safely.
Bathurst Street is part of the $1.5 billion 10-Year Roads Capital Construction Program, and is one of over 100 road construction projects under way this year.
“Building, maintaining and modernizing our regional road system is a critically important service we provide as a regional municipality,” Emmerson said. “By undertaking projects like this one here on Bathurst Street, we are helping to ensure the efficient movement of people and goods across the region.
“We are supporting job creation and economic growth. And we are creating livable, complete and interconnected communities with a variety of transportation options and important environmental enhancements.
“If you look at this specific project we have reconnected an important link in the Regional transportation network providing increased capacity and travel options serving northern York Region.
“We have constructed additional lanes, updated the intersections, improved drainage around the roadway, planted trees and installed wildlife crossing structures.
“And that aligns nicely with the priorities of York Region residents. Individuals and businesses have told us repeatedly that traffic congestion is by far their most pressing issue.
“For instance, we also constructed a new roundabout at the Keele Street and Lloydtown-Aurora Road intersection in the Township of King.
“These are important projects that were managed professionally. Our staff are truly an inspiration.”
