King City’s Rosie MacLennan seems to be in top form just weeks before she defends her trampoline gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
She posted the second-best score of her career on Saturday at the Trampoline World Cup in Switzerland, a 56.660 in the final, only behind her gold medal-winning performance at the 2012 Olympic Games.
It was easily enough to earn gold, almost a point ahead of Zhu Xueying of China and Russia’s Susana Kochesok.
“I am very happy with how this competition went,” said MacLennan in a press release from Gymnastics Canada. “After last week, my focus was to try to maintain height and stay tighter in the air. In the finals, I competed my 15.0 degree of difficulty rather than the three triples routine (15.6) because we felt it would be more stable. I’m very excited to get back home to train, this trip overall gave me a great combination of motivation and confidence leading into the final stretch before Rio.”
Last week MacLennan finished a disappointing sixth at another World Cup event in Italy.
She is hoping the result will be a case of déjà vu, as she won the competition leading up to the 2012 Games in London as well.
MacLennan’s coach Dave Ross was also happy with her results.
“I am really excited that Rosie was able to deliver brilliant performances under pressure,” he said in the release. “I am looking forward to the remaining training days and the thrill of the Olympics.”
Aurora’s Sam Sendel, MacLennan’s training partner, took a huge risk in the competition by attempting to perform a triple somersault, something that had never been done in competition. It wasn’t in the cards for the 24-year old, landing in 25th place.
The Township’s other resident gymnast, Nobleton’s Jason Burnett, finished 19th overall on the men’s side with a score of 101.695 after failing to complete either of his two attempts.
The competition was the last for both MacLennan and Burnett before they head to Rio in August.
