Buddy Bench unveiled at St. Mary school By Mark Pavilons “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” No one need feel excluded or alone. With these sentiments, a small yet powerful gesture at a local elementary school can send ripples throughout the community. Staff, students and local dignitaries unveiled the new “Buddy Bench,” a place of friendship, at St. Mary Catholic Elementary School in Nobleton. Poised at the edge of the playground is this bench, a place where a seat is always available. If a student is alone, excluded or picked on, all they have to do is visit the Buddy Bench and others will flock to their assistance. Hopes are, according to principal Lori Piccoli, that the bench will alleviate loneliness and foster friendship. The school is committed to the social well being of its students and the bench will help achieve this goal. This project represents a true partnership of the school, school board, Township, parish and No Frills. John Ciarallo of No Frills set the wheels in motion and provided the funds for the bench. With help from Councillor David Boyd and the Township, this special project – the first of its kind in King – became a reality. Deacon Milan Popik, of St. Mary Church, said this bench will provide inspiration for others to follow and to make new friends. It embodies Christian fundamentals of inclusivity and getting along. When school and community work together, great things happen, according to board trustee Elizabeth Crowe. Mayor Pellegrini said it's all about the students showing leadership. That, and feeling welcome is what King is all about. “It's all about the kids,” Ciarallo said. Seeing the smiles on children's faces is all the thanks he really needs. He's a firm believer that healthy children make a healthy community and he urged all of the students to “pay it forward.” Councillor Boyd offered his praise and thanks to all involved, particularly Jennifer Sanginesi, a member of the St. Mary parent council. |
