Nobleton speed skater strikes gold twice at national Games Arik Kimber celebrates one of his two gold medal wins in speed skating at the Special Olympics National Winter Games in Newfoundland in early March. By Jake Courtepatte Arik Kimber has taken his success from the King Speed Skating Club, to the provincial level, and now to the nation's biggest stages. The Nobleton resident followed up on his Ontario Speed Skating Regional gold in February with a pair of gold medals at the Special Olympics National Winter Games earlier this month, representing Ontario along with 14 other skaters. The Games, held in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, had representatives from all ten provinces and two territories competing across six different sports. Kimber took home the gold in both the 333-metre and 1000-metre speed skating competitions. “I was really proud to represent Ontario and I made a lot of new friends from different provinces,” said Kimber, speed skating since the age of eleven. “It was very exciting for me because it was my first time at the National games and I was one of the youngest athletes there!” As part of the Corner Brook experience, Kimber and his teammates had the chance to meet skating legend Catriona Le May Doan, who ran a skills clinic for the athletes. “It was quite the adventure both on and off the ice,” said Kimber. Kimber is still trying to fundraise to help cover the personal costs that were assigned to each athlete as part of Team Ontario, having reached almost fifty-percent of his goal so far. The fundraiser is for travel and expenses, specialized equipment, and personal travel gear.
