Arts Society King to select winners of the ‘Golden Brush Award’

By Grazyna Tonkiel
For the past decade, Arts Society King (ASK) has brought art and culture to our community.
To my heart's content, this coming Thursday, Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Heritage and Cultural Centre (Museum), the three finest young visual artists and high school students from Villanova College, will be recognized for their artistic achievements as winners of the inaugural Arts Society King Young Artists Juried Exhibition. The exhibition will run for the entire month until Feb. 29.
All of the submitted works will be juried by two iconic Canadian artists: Helen Lucas and Ernestine Tahedl, ASK's honorary members.
The rewards will be presented in the presence of King Mayor Steve Pellegrini, president of Villanova College Paul Paradiso, and Villanova College visual arts teacher, Angelo Casbarro.
Helen Lucas is an internationally acclaimed Canadian artist, the recipient of The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, and almost 20 other distinctions. Her works have been exhibited in over seventy solo exhibitions and even more group exhibitions, in Canada, USA and Mexico, and are part of over 80 public and private collections worldwide. She was a drawing and painting Master Teacher at the University of Toronto, and authored many publications about art.
Ernestine Tahedl was born in Austria and received her Master's Degree in graphic art from the Vienna Academy of Applied Arts. She is a member of Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
Her work is represented in public, corporate and private collections and galleries in Canada, United States, France, Switzerland, Austria, and Japan. Her awards include the Graduation Prize of the Austrian Government, the Bronze Medal of the Vienna International Exhibition of Paintings, The Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, the Mayor's Prize at Kyoto Japan, and many, many more.
The Arts Society King Annual Young Artist Juried Exhibition is being established as ASK's newest initiative. It has been conceived by ASK's executive director, Teri Hastings. Our aim is to help young and talented visual artists start their careers and develop an artistic presence in the community.
This year, only high school students from Villanova Collage will participate, but starting next year we plan to include all secondary schools in the region.
Gold, silver and bronze Brush Awards will be granted. The Golden Brush Award winner will also receive an ASK President Award.
Please, come and see the spectacular works of young artists. Your presence at the ceremony will recognize their talent, and encourage them to grow and develop artistic skills and sensitivity.
Hope to see you all on Thursday, Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Heritage and Cultural Centre (Museum) in King City.
