Every point matters with the end of the GMOHL season looming, but somebody forgot to tell the Schomberg Cougars.
With a pair of losses to the Erin Shamrocks and Huntsville Otters over the weekend, the club is falling farther and farther down the standings ladder and into dangerous territory, all with only two games left on the schedule.

Overtime loss

Thursday's final battle with Erin seemed all but over just five minutes into the second period, after Declan Lampe, Carter LeRoux, and Justin Formenton gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead, carrying over into the final frame.
There, an epic special teams collapse was the culprit in a comeback for the Shamrocks, who notched three consecutive power play goals to send the game to overtime.
It took Alec Littlejohn less than a minute to beat Schomberg goaltender Vince Michelizzi, once again on the power play.

Otters tough

In an attempt to shake things up, Alex Traikos got the nod between the pipes for the Cougars on Friday, facing the 20-15-3 Huntsville Otters.
He fared no better, allowing three goals in the second period in a 4-0 shutout loss. Huntsville goalie Nathan Antonides stopped all 39 shots he faced in the contest.
The loss was the sixth in a row for Schomberg, picking up only one point in the three-week period.
This level of play nearing the end of the season could have drastic consequences for the Cougars. While a spot in the post-season is already secured thanks to the basement-dwelling Orillia Terriers' elimination, the Cougars are currently tied in seventh place in the nine-team league, and are very much in danger of dropping into the last playoff position.
That would set up a first-round meeting with the Alliston Hornets, who are experiencing a season never before seen in the Junior C league. The perennial powerhouse team has lost just one game both on the road and at home, and are 25 points up on the second place Otters heading into the final weekend of play.
In order for the Cougars to avoid that dreaded match-up, the road forward is paved with cruel irony. Both remaining games on the schedule are against the Hornets, a home-and-away series that starts Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the Trisan Centre.
Currently tied with the Shamrocks at 29 points (13-22-3), Schomberg has also played one more game.
