Cougars drop fourth straight in regulation

Vince Decastro heads to the front of the Penetang net in Schomberg's 6 - 3 loss to the Kings on Friday.

By Jake Courtepatte

It's certainly not the way the Schomberg Cougars want to enter the post-season.

Following a solid 2-0 shutout of the second-place Huntsville Otters in early January, the Cougars have fallen apart defensively, giving up 24 goals over a current four-game losing streak.

Terriers take a bite

Last week began on the wrong foot when the Cougars fell 6-5 to the Orillia Terriers, the basement dwellers of the Georgian Mid-Ontario Hockey League. Holding onto a 4-2 lead, goaltender Alex Traikos was chased from the net when he gave up three quick Terriers goals in succession, forcing the Cougars to play catch-up to start the third period.

Vince Michelizzi was tagged with a goal against just over a minute into the third, while Carter LeRoux's third goal of the game wasn't enough to draw the Cougars even. LeRoux added an assist as well, getting in on four of Schomberg's five goals in the losing effort.

Kings reign

Michelizzi earned the start on Friday against the Penetang Kings, a night he would probably rather forget. He looked solid when making some highlight-reel saves for his team in the first, but Penetang's 19 shots in the period squeaked through three times, all on rebound opportunities that should have been swept from Michelizzi's crease.

Kiefer McIntosh and LeRoux countered with goals of their own in the second, but a pair of Penetang goals in the third as well as a marker from Blake Culley left Schomberg on the wrong end of a 6-3 score.

Stayner stays sharp

Penetang's 42 shots on Friday weren't enough to keep Michelizzi out of the crease on Monday, hosting the Stayner Siskins. He was beat just over seven minutes in, before JP Crescenzi tied the game on the power play after Michelizzi got tangled up with Stayner's Kyle Sickinger.

Three straight goals for Stayner, including an empty-netter in the dying seconds, earned Schomberg another loss. Michelizzi stopped 32 of the 35 shots he faced.

Despite the setback, there is a bright spot for the Cougars: they aren't the only team struggling. The Erin Shamrocks have lost three straight, and the Kings' win over the Cougars was their first since December.

With that said, league standings haven't drastically changed from Schomberg's losing streak. They remain sixth in the nine-team league, although well back of the Caledon Golden Hawks for fifth and only a few points up on both the Shamrocks and Kings.

It all adds up to some heavy implications for this Thursday's home match-up with Erin, set for an 8:30 p.m. puck drop at Trisan Centre. With just over a week left on the regular season schedule,  Schomberg holds a two-point lead on Erin, who has a game in hand.

The Cougars round out the week in Huntsville on Friday to face the Otters.
