The minor atom A NobleKing Knights exploded out of the gate at last weekend’s international Silver Stick tournament in Newmarket, but ultimately fell short of their second tournament win in as many months.
It was a large crowd at the Ray Twinney Complex for Thursday evening’s opener, a match-up with the home town Newmarket Redmen.
Kieran Riley had the Knights up by two early in the game, cutting in front of the net for a nice backhand just before the end of the first period. Patrick Sutherland was solid in net, carrying a shutout into the dying minutes of the second, when a rebound found its way over his shoulder.
The Knights ran away with the score in the final frame, up 3-1 when Gianluca Nicolini tipped in a Daniel Manfrini shot from the point. Nathan Evangelista put it away for good, tapping in a rebound from a shot by Jack Caravaggio, while one more untimely rebound beat Sutherland for a final score of 5-2.
It was a different story with the Woolwich Wildcats, coming off a 4-0 shutout win in their first game of round robin played. A well-fought battle ended 4-2 in favour of Woolwich, ultimately giving Woolwich the top position in division A.
NobleKing handled their other two opponents with ease, a 7-2 win over the St. Clair Saints and a 5-2 win over the Vaughan Rangers, to finish second in the division. It would eventually be their downfall, as they were forced to contend with the Woodstock Jr. Navy Vets of Division B, who had allowed only three goals all tournament.
The Vets shut out the Knights 4-0 in the tournament semi-final, before going on to beat the Wildcats in the final. NobleKing was the second-highest scoring team in the tournament.
The Knights reached the tournament when they won the regional Silver Stick competition in Cobourg in December, going undefeated while defeating the Quinte West Hawks 6-2 in the final.
