King Lions run away with YRAA Tier 2 title

By Jake Courtepatte
King City Lions, we hear you loud and clear.
A heartbreaking final week loss to move down to the YRAA's consolation bracket was an anomaly – the Lions proved they deserve to be among the top football programs in York Region after another blowout victory to claim the Tier 2 title on Saturday.
In the second game of a championship triple-header at St. Max Kolbe in Aurora, the Lions faced off against the Brother Andre Cardinals from Markham and promptly took home the title in a game that was never even close.
Fullback Adamo Sciarra provided a brunt of the offence for King City in a 53-14 final.
Just two plays after Lions quarterback Michael Bazzo completed a touchdown pass to Ryan Tripone five minutes into the game, the Cardinals gave up an interception that brought the Lions back into the red zone.
An easy floater from Bazzo made it 14-0 barely out of the gate.
With the Cardinals looking to steady the Lions' offensive rush, a face mask penalty sent the Lions back to the one yard line on first down on their next drive.
The 6'0, 205-lb. Sciarra took it to the house up the middle on the very next play for a 21-0 lead after the first quarter, scoring on all three of their opening drives.
Up 22-0 in the second, the Lions conceded their first points of the game when they failed to get out of their end zone, conceding a safety for two points.
Sciarra answered with a sweep down the left side for the major on a four-play drive minutes later.
An almost 40-yard field goal from the Lions to end the second half was the nail in the coffin, making the score 32-2.
Sciarra finished the game with four touchdowns, while Tripone added a pair and Josh Menna had a major of his own.
Lions co-coach Jeff Masterson was proud of his team following the victory.
“They deserved this, they worked hard all year. I think we proved we can be one of the better teams out there.”
The Lions earned a berth in the final after shutting out the St. Joan of Arc Thunder last week 45-0, led by a three-touchdown performance from Bazzo and a pair from Sciarra.
The Cardinals were no pushover – their trip to the title game came from a 45-8 victory in the other semifinal.
In Tier 1 action, the powerhouse Huron Warriors captured their seventh YRAA title in 12 consecutive appearances with a 42-3 victory over the St. Max Kolbe Mustangs.
Huron Heights also took home the junior title, playing to a 14-7 score over the Bill Crothers Colts earlier in the day, thanks to a touchdown in the dying seconds of regulation.
Both Warriors teams went undefeated on the season.

The King City Lions stomped on the Brother Andre Cardinals 53-14 in the YRAA Tier 2 final at St. Max Kolbe on Saturday.
