The under-14 Country Day School Cyclones remained the team to be reckoned with in the CISAA soccer circuit with an exciting win on home field Monday.

Having dominated the competition in the west division leading to a 4-0 record, they were slightly caught off guard by a 2-2 Sterling Hall School team that came out determined to break their streak.

Most of the action in the opening minutes took place in the Cyclones' end, with possession numbers highly in the favour of SHS. However, it was CDS that got on the board first, a nice strike that fooled the SHS keeper. The home team was saved by the crossbar just before the first half whistle, taking a 1-nil lead into halftime.

With ends switched and extremely high winds, the game seemed to shift in the other direction. This time is was CDS that began the half with dominating possession, but the shutout was broken when the wind took a soft chip off a SHS player's foot and helped it sail over the keeper's head and into the Cyclones' net.

The Cyclones countered with a controversial tally just minutes later, with a number of SHS players calling on the referee for what they thought was a missed foul in the box.

With fire now in their bellies, SHS tied the game for the second time on a beautiful strike off the woodwork and in from around 30 feet out, ecstatic to perhaps keep CDS from earning a win for the first time all season.

Their celebration would be short-lived, as the Cyclones regained the lead late in the game on a beautiful tic-tac-toe play that ended with a downed keeper and a soft touch into the net. They preserved their perfect season with a 3-2 victory.

“It was a tough game for both sides, with the wind and the cold, but the boys worked hard and it paid off,” said head coach Rob Waldron.

The match marked the first time all season CDS has allowed more than one goal against.

Although currently at the top of league standings, their biggest challenge remains to be seen in the final game of the regular season. The Cyclones visit Appleby College after press-time Wednesday in a battle of the undefeated teams, to determine first overall ranking heading into the final tournament.

The winners of the east and west divisions will battle it out on Oct. 31 at Bayview Glen in Toronto.
