King United soccer shines at McGarrigle Cup

In just their second year of league-wide McGarrigle Cup eligibility, the U14 King City Royals soccer club are proving themselves to be contenders in the York Region Youth Soccer League.
Despite going winless in their two previous contests, the Royals have been on the winning side of some lopsided scores this season, including a 6-1 victory over the Richmond Hill Raiders – an opponent they faced in the league’s McGarrigle Cup quarter-finals on Monday.
Joshua Rivas-Taranto, who has led the team throughout regular season play with 10 goals through seven games, entered the contest having scored both King City goals in a 2-1 victory over the Oak Ridges Knights in the first game of the championship.
Following an early Richmond Hill goal to put the home team on top, Rivas-Taranto tied the score on a free kick from just outside the box, a hard strike that went right through the keeper. King City took the lead minutes later on a two-on-one opportunity, giving the Raiders keeper little opportunity to cover the net.
Before the half, King City’s Kiyan Jadavji took advantage of a missed clear in front of the Ranger net, burying what was essentially an empty-netter to take a two-goal advantage into half time.
Despite continuous pressure from the visiting Royals, it was Richmond Hill that struck first in the second when the King City netminder was part of a pile-up and had no chance to make the save.
The Royals were able to hold on to the lead for the remainder of the game, jumping to 2-0 in McGarrigle Cup standings.
In regular season play, the U14 club returns to the pitch next Wednesday to face the Aurora Stingers at Optimist Park in Aurora.
The Royals’ next McGarrigle Cup game goes at the end of the month, with their opponent yet to be determined.
Elsewhere around the organization, King United Soccer Club has been staking its claim as a contender in the YRSL. The Royals’ U13 counterparts are also undefeated in McGarrigle Cup play, defeating Richmond Hill 2-0 in their first game while preparing to take on Oak Ridges this week.
On the girls’ side, the U113 Royals have allowed only five goals in six games this season, winning their first McGarrigle Cup match up last month by a score of 4-0 against Glen Shields. Their quarter-final match up also goes this week, taking on the Lake Simcoe Soccer Club on the road on Thursday.
