A local filmmaker has embarked on an ambitious project and he’s hoping King will embrace it.
Shayne Maglay officially launched his film project at the recent Schomberg Fair, and he wants to let the public know about his film so they can get behind it.
The film – Mountain Man, Adventures of Breckinridge Elkins – is an action/comedy/adventure, written by American author Robert E. Howard, best known for creating the character Conan the Barbarian. The director is Stanislav Roud.
The story revolves around the story of a simple farm boy, who gets sent into a fictitious town for the first time to pick up a package for his father. While in town, he gets mistaken for an underground boxing champion and ends up being subject to a prize fight.
“It is a comedic story with sentimental notes,” Maglay said. “I think will be a great show of the geography of rural King Township and will resonate with many local residents.”
He estimates his crew this time will be approximately 20 if not more and will shoot over five days in and around Schomberg. It is not for profit and “we will need all hands on deck for this one. Again, this isn’t for my benefit but something I was the community to be proud of,” he said.
His team has started an online fundraising campaign with a goal of $10,000 by August and $20,000 by October. Any money left over from the production will go to the OSPCA. There will also be a community screening and those proceeds will also go to the cause.
Maglay hopes to entice some King-based businesses for support. Already, several have stepped up to help out, including  Brownsville Junction, Foley Restoration, The Scruffy Duck, Schomberg Fair, Sears, OSPCA, King Township and Leonardo’s Pizza.
Maglay and his team anticipate shooting in early November.
Promotional material and the website are done, and the main focus now is raising funds, securing resources, volunteers, props, construction materials, etc.
They have also signed a deal for original music to be recorded by Toronto-based progressive folk band Birds of Bellwoods.
“I want to make this film all about the community, so it is for that reason that we will be looking for local sponsors to donate either hard cash or discounter services like food, residents to offer filming locations.”
Last year, Maglay shot “Mercy” in King. It’s the true life story of Canadian Captain Robert Semrau, the first Canadian soldier to be charged with murder in a combat zone in 2006.
Maglay he holds an Advanced Diploma in Film and Television Production with Honours from Humber College’s North campus. He is currently enrolled in the 7th semester of Humber’s Film and Media Production B.A.A. at their Lakeshore campus.
Maglay is also a volunteer firefighter with King’s Fire and Emergency Services.
He’s won multiple awards for filmmaking and wrote/produced the Hot Docs documentary “The War at Home” in 2012.
