It’s always nice to earn some recognition for your achievements, and for the Juvenile Red Wings minor hockey team, that recognition came in the form of a victory parade.
Dozens of parents and supporters came together outside of the Trisan Centre on Saturday to pay tribute to the team, coming off one of their most successful seasons to date. Schomberg Minor Hockey teamed up with the Schomberg Firefighters’ Association to honour a long-standing tradition, parading the boys through town on one of their two historic fire trucks.
The 1929 antique truck, driven by Schomberg fire captain Randy Shepherd, stalled in the Trisan Centre parking lot before firing back up and taking the team down Main Street with trophies in hand. Their final stop was at the team sponsor “In This Corner” for a celebration meal.
But while the truck hit a bump in the road on its journey, the Juvy Red Wings season certainly did not.
They capped off their impressive season with an OMHA title earlier this month, after earning an international Silver Stick tournament mid-way through the season.
President of Schomberg Minor Hockey Kelly Harbridge was there to see the boys off, offering up his own compliments on the successful season.
“It’s a good group of boys, they’re really happy with their season and we’re really happy for them. They got a lot of support this year.”
Schomberg Minor Hockey has already expressed the intention to ice a juvenile team again next year, which should come as no surprise to anyone that knows the depth of the roster.
“A lot of them are leaving for college, or their futures are still up in the air,” said Harbridge of the roster of 18-to-20-year-olds. “But we know we’ve got a good core, and next year is already looking promising again.”
Prior to the parade, the Red Wings held a skate for prospects interested in joining the defending champions next season.
As for the truck, Shepherd says the station is currently looking for hard-to-find replacement parts, after raising money for the cause with a charity pond hockey tournament this past winter.
