King’s hockey champions help YSMHL to East/West Championship

The Novice AE Red Wings won both of their games against the Whitby Wildcats to help the York-Simcoe Minor Hockey League to a victory over the Lakeshore Hockey League.

Two of King Township’s regional champions can add one more piece of hardware to their successful minor hockey seasons.
The York-Simcoe/Lakeshore Challenge was the final step in the 2014-15 season recently, pitting the winners of the two leagues against each other in a battle of Southern Ontario. Needless to say, King’s two representative teams did their part.
Fresh off a six-game championship series victory against nearby rivals the Aurora Tigers, the Atom A NobleKing Knights were in the opening game of the tournament Saturday morning facing the Whitby Wildcats in Innisfil. The result was a 3-3 tie, followed by another tie between the teams later that afternoon.
Over in Whitby, the Novice AE Schomberg Red Wings were dominant against the hometown Wildcats all weekend. Following a 4-2 opening day victory, the two-game series turned competitive when the Wildcats rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie game two with under 10 minutes to play.
But it was the resilient Red Wings that regained the lead shortly after the next whistle, adding two more in the final two minutes to sweep the series with a 6-3 win.
By Sunday’s end, York-Simcoe’s 32-17-3 record gave the league a definitive victory against their eastern competitors.
The atmosphere at the Challenge was electric, and for the tournament’s executives, a welcome sight for post-OMHA hockey.
“It’s an opportunity for teams to flex their offensive muscle against another league,” said Mark Beauchevin, OMHA representative. “There’s good, friendly competition after the season is done.”
And with that, it’s a wrap on the 2014-15 minor hockey season.
The Schomberg Red Wings and NobleKing Knights want to remind all players and parents that registration has already begun for the 2015-16 season, and can be done through the Hockey Canada registry. Knights rep tryouts have also already been scheduled, set for the end of the month at the Trisan Centre in Schomberg.
