An influx of King City Skating Club success stories has culminated with a new world champion.
On April 10 and 11, Alessia Chiovitti joined her synchronized skating team NEXXICE at FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton for the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships.
There they won gold on home ice, in front of a crowd of almost 8,000 spectators, with their performance to Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” It was a narrow defeat over the Finnish team, topping them by less than one point, with Russia taking third place.
Another Canadian team, Les Supremes from Quebec, skated to the sixth-best finish in final standings after earning fourth in Saturday’s free program.
In her first year as a senior within the Burlington-based club, Chiovitti brings 12 years of experience from her home club in King City and Aurora Skating Club. She joined 19 of her peers in the victory, marking the first Canadian win since 2009, when NEXXICE also took gold.
