Local Liberals put their full support behind Deb Schulte to lead them into this year’s federal election.
Schulte handily won the nomination for the riding of King-Vaughan at Sunday’s nomination meeting held at King City Public School.
Schulte was “just overwhelmed” at the “amazing support” she received. While the process was a bit nerve-racking, Schulte took the nomination in the second ballot, narrowly missing the 50% mark on the first vote. She said she knew it was going to be close given the high caliber of candidates. Her closest competitor was Major Khalifa.
Schulte had nothing but praise for her competitors, noting they all led very respectful, honest and professional campaigns. This gives the Liberal party a good name and she hopes to draw on that top-shelf knowledge and support to create the big team.
“It’s nice to see the quality of candidates wanting to be part of it,” she said.
Schulte was lucky in that she had many contacts in the region, through her municipal and regional council term in Vaughan.
She had connections in King and built upon those relationships.
The hard work is just beginning and Schulte will be strengthening those ties with municipal and regional leaders, including mayors and councillors.
“I have always had a soft spot for King, ”said Schulte who is married with two children and resides in Woodbridge. “I’ve had a lot of connections in King and I know about the issues here. I feel more affinity with King than I do with Woodbridge and I want to be your representative. There is a lot I can do at the federal level.”
“During my term, I was a strong advocate for the environment but I’m not all about the environment,” added Schulte. “I’m all about good government and fiscal responsibility and accountability.
“I got to be known as a problem solver and a change agent,” said Schulte. “I’ve always been interested in fixing things. I love connecting with people and trying to make things better for all of us.”
Schulte served the Province on the Greenbelt Task Force and the Oak Ridges Moraine Foundation Board for four years.
Schulte believes the Liberal Party, led by Justin Trudeau, has the best vision to guide Canada in building a positive future.
“The direction is true, the heart is true to take the country in the right direction and I’m inspired to be part of his team,” said Schulte. “I think this is the time. There is a momentum for change. It’s an exciting time, a time for change and I want to work together to make that change.”
