Deb Schulte is hoping to win the Liberal nomination for the new federal riding of King-Vaughan.
Schulte held two meet and greets in King recently, one at the King Township Museum and the other at Arbour Restaurant in Schomberg.
“I am seeking the Liberal nomination because of my passion for public service, my belief that the citizens of King-Vaughan deserve a representative with a proven track record of positive results and my confidence in the Liberal Party to deliver the best approach to leading Canada to a better future,” said Schulte.
The federal Liberal nomination meeting has not yet been called, but it is expected to be in the next few weeks. When it is, Schulte hopes she gets enough votes to be nominated the Liberal candidate to represent the riding.
As a former regional councillor for the City of Vaughan, Schulte has served the residents of Vaughan and King as a representative on York Region Council for the past four years.
“I have always had a soft spot for King, ”said Schulte who is married with two children and resides in Woodbridge. “I’ve had a lot of connections in King and I know about the issues here. I feel more affinity with King than I do with Woodbridge and I want to be your representative. There is a lot I can do at the federal level.”
“During my term, I was a strong advocate for the environment but I’m not all about the environment,” added Schulte. “I’m all about good government and fiscal responsibility and accountability.”
In terms of education, Schulte earned a degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Princeton University, and spent 22 years with Bombardier Aerospace before entering political life.
“I got to be known as a problem solver and a change agent,” said Schulte. “I’ve always been interested in fixing things. I love connecting with people and trying to make things better for all of us.”
After leaving Bombardier Aerospace, Schulte served the Province on the Greenbelt Task Force and the Oak Ridges Moraine Foundation Board for four years.
Schulte believes the Liberal Party, led by Justin Trudeau, has the best vision to guide Canada in building a positive future.
“The direction is true, the heart is true to take the country in the right direction and I’m inspired to be part of his team,” said Schulte. “I think this is the time. There is a momentum for change. I would like to bring all my skills to the Party and build a better future for Canada. It’s an exciting time, a time for change and I want to work together to make that change.”
But she needs supporters to vote for her at the nomination convention. In order to participate in the nomination process you have to live in the riding and be a member of the Liberal Party. She urges anyone that signs up with the Party contact her to let her know so that she can inform them when the nomination meeting is called.
In addition to Schulte, three other nominees are vying for the position including Gary Gladstone, Major Khalifa and Mario Racco. There are no nominees from King.
“I can’t do it alone,” said Schulte. “It all comes down to the person who can get the most people to the nomination meeting voting for them wins. That’s how it works. We are racing to get every person we can signed up and in. A lot of people are not comfortable signing up with a Party. It’s a chance to come out and vote for your representative for the Liberals. We need big numbers and we need to mobilize everyone we can to get memberships for me.”
She hopes to have the opportunity to be a strong voice for King-Vaughan to ensure that the riding’s issues are heard and addressed at the federal level in Ottawa.
