The sights, sounds and flavours of the Big Apple are coming to Nobleton, all in aid of the King Township Food Bank.
In what’s shaping up to be the must-attend soiree of the fall, Sip & Savour brings together haute cuisine, a dash of jazz, camaraderie and a smattering of fresh seafood, all in the relaxed, scenic atmosphere at Nobleton Lakes Golf Club.
Support from the community is overwhelming for this inaugural event which takes place Oct. 16 from 5-8 p.m. MC for the evening is the King Weekly Sentinel’s own editor Mark Pavilons.
The evening is going to be filled with delectable wine and food. On tap will be a chef preparing fresh sushi, an oyster bar, antipasto station, dessert station and more. There will be a wide selection of hot and cold hors d’oeuvres.
The menu is being developed based on food donations from local farmers, manufacturers and retailers and there will be something for everyone.
“We are delighted to be the venue sponsor for Sip & Savour and I know all of the guests will enjoy our beautiful facilities,” said Michael Yordanou, food and beverage manager at Nobleton Lakes. “Our ballroom overlooks the hills of the golf course and fall colours should be at their peak. Our chefs are planning mouth-watering hors d’oeuvres and are excited to exercise their creativity in developing the evening’s menu.”
There will be both a live and silent auction, with the highlight item being a box for 8 at a Raptors game. Visitors are encouraged to bid on many other tempting auction items that have been donated by local businesses. Mayor Steve Pellegrini has agreed to be “auctioned off” as a breakfast partner for the lucky bidder.
“I am looking forward to attending this great event, especially considering its very local flavour with so many King businesses supporting it,” Pellegrini said.
Generously providing the entertainment will be Ron Littlejohn, singer of the Toronto funk/soul band Ron Littlejohn & The Funk Embassy. Littlejohn and his family recently moved to King Township from the Big Smoke.
Tickets are $40 and include 2 complimentary glasses of wine or beer.  Tickets can be purchased on line at kingtownshipfoodbank.ca, but for the biggest benefit for the food bank people can purchase their tickets at the Scotiabank Nobleton branch. For every ticket purchased at the branch, Scotiabank will match with an additional $40 donated to the food bank.
“Supporting our local community, especially its food bank, is very important to Scotiabank, so we are delighted to be a platinum sponsor for Sip & Savour. It is an exciting time for us as we join the King Township community and we are looking forward to meeting more community members at the event,” said Natalie Latchman-Greaves, branch manager, Scotiabank Nobleton.
Organizers point out there still is an opportunity to sponsor this event, or to donate a silent auction item. Contact Margaret Hastings at margarethastings@sympatico.ca.
“Even in King, there are families and individuals who have had to turn to the Food Bank for assistance. The Food Bank serves approximately 180 people monthly, with the number expected to rise to 200 by 2015,” said Carol Ann Trabert, Food Bank president. “But there are still many who could use our help and do not come forward; it’s a very difficult thing for someone to do. The happiest stories come when we learn we have been a bridge to better times.
“We have an amazing team of long term,  dedicated volunteers whose passion is helping others make ends meet.”
Food Bank registrants include couples who are underemployed and supporting their own parents as well as young children, single parents running from job to job as well as single people, some with long-term disabilities, and  seniors who are no longer able to cope with rising costs. Nearly half the clients are children and seniors. The Food Bank’s mandate is to provide one week’s worth of non-perishable groceries every month, along with food cards to help with milk, eggs, etc.
