Mission trip to Honduras a family affair

By Jeff Doner

Joined by some friends, the Orlandi family of Nobleton is heading to La Ceiba, Honduras on a mission to build a house for a single mother and her five children at the end of the month. But before they leave, they are looking for a little support here at a home.

Nino Orlandi will be heading to Honduras with his sons Noah, 13, and two twins Max and Jonah, 12, who all play baseball here at home with the King Township Baseball Association.

The boys love their baseball and are hoping to spread their passion for the game to children in need while in Honduras, so here at home they have asked people to donate any new or used baseball equipment. Whether it's baseball gloves, bats, or masks, anything will help the mission!

Nino said the hope is to fill as many check-in bags as possible to take down with them.

"The kids down there are pretty impoverished and most of them would never own a baseball glove, so we thought something like that would be an amazing thing for them to have," Nino said. "The four of us are going to fill our bags with baseball equipment, so we're looking for gloves, bats and balls. That's all they would need down there."

Max said the trip will be an eye-opener and he is looking forward to showing some of the kids how to play a game that he loves.

"I'm looking forward to going down there with all of our friends and I think it's going to be a great experience," he said. "All the kids in the group are going to an orphanage, where I think we're going to be handing out the baseball equipment. It's going to be cool teaching them how to play, if they don't already know."

More importantly, the Orlandis have some tough work ahead of them in building the house. They are heading down with a group of 10 children and five adults.

The idea to head south on a mission first came up after a close family friend passed away recently.

"She always wanted to take her boys on a mission trip, so that was kind of the idea and we decided this was a good year to go," Nino explained.

Nino then contacted Missionary Ventures, a not-for-profit Christian organization based out of Guelph that helps organize mission trips all around the world.

"There was a need for homes in Honduras, so we decided to go build a house there," he said. "It's nothing like a house here, but it's built up on stilts, because during rain season everything kind of floods in that part of the country."

The group is responsible for covering all their own costs, but held a fundraiser to help pay for basically all the construction materials to build the house. People are also taking down medical and school supplies.

Nino has gone on a mission before and is looking forward to doing this one with his sons.

"I think we live in this world where unless you see or experience anything different, you think this is just the way the world functions and in fact there are a lot of impoverished people around the world," he said.

"I think this is going to be an eye-opener for them, to see how other people live in the world and they will hopefully have a better appreciation for what we take for granted here."

Added Jonah: "I think it'll be good to learn about another part of the world and to be with our friends and family. It's going to be a lot different from how we live up here."

You can give your baseball gear to any KTBA coach to drop off at either baseball bunkers in Nobleton or King City. Items can also be dropped off at the Orlandi home at 9 O'Neill Court in Nobleton or St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Nobleton, which also has a box at the front of the church.
