Cornhuskers looking for first season win

The Angus Black Sox catcher seemingly tags a Nobleton runner at home plate, but the umpire ultimately called him safe after the catcher dropped the ball at Nobleton Sports Park on Saturday afternoon. The Cornhuskers played a strong game, but still only came out with a 3-3 tie.

The Nobleton Cornhuskers senior men’s baseball team have started their second season in the North Dufferin Baseball League and look good despite the fact they are still searching for their first win of the season after three games.
After dropping their first two games of the season against the reigning NDBL champion Bolton Brewers the previous week, the Cornhuskers were hoping to rebound against the Angus Black Sox on Saturday afternoon.
“We did start those games against Bolton pretty strong, but the wheels kind of feel off later in both of those games,” said newcomer Kevin Winters. “So I think if we work on our offense a bit and get the defense playing sound, we’ll get some wins coming in.”
The game against Angus also marked the first time the Cornhuskers got to play on the revamped diamond at Nobleton Sports Park.
Returning player Steve Scobie was on the mound for the Nobleton and looked solid, carrying over his strong play from last season.
The Cornhuskers got off to a good start in this one, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI hit from Scobie himself.
The Black Sox would come back to tie the score in the third, but another new Nobleton’s catcher smacked a double to give the lead back to Nobleton.
Things stayed relatively even for the next couple of innings, but Winters helped add to the Cornhuskers lead when he drove in another run with a double to put his team up 3-1.
Looking to nail down the win, the Cornhuskers tried to build on their lead, but squandered some quality scoring chances getting caught on the base paths.
The Black Sox seemed to use that momentum in the seventh inning, tagging Scobie for a home run and then eventually tying the game 3-3.
Despite one final attempt at taking the win in the bottom of the inning, the Cornhuskers were shut down and forced to accept a tie.
“Obviously it’s going to get tight in these kinds of games, but it’s still early in the season and we’ve still got some things to work on, including our defensive positioning to try and get it together, but I think it’ll come around eventually,” said Winters.
This year the Cornhuskers feature some new faces and are confident they have the tools needed to take a run in this year’s playoffs.
Their record currently sits at 0-2-1 and they will be looking to improve that this week when they travel to Midland to face the Indians on Thursday.
