NobleKing atom A Knights win spring thaw tournament

April 22, 2014   ·   0 Comments

Congratulations to the NobleKing atom A hockey team as they ended their season as the Pickering Panthers Spring Thaw Tournament champions.
The boys opened the tournament Friday morning with a close 1-0 win over West Hill, thanks to Leo Graziosi’s rebound goal from a beautiful shot from Christopher Petrungaro.
Numerous key saves by goalie Steven Selvaggi helped preserve the lead and secure the shutout win.
In their second game of the day, the young Knights dominated the South Muskoka Bears. All six NobleKing forwards scored to contribute to the impressive 9-0 win with a pair of goals each from Graziosi, Ryan Dimitroff and Cameron Robinson, and single tallies from Petrungaro, Aurelio De Rose and Michael Termini. Strong play by goalie Matthew Maniatis, helped secure the shutout.
The third game in the round robin, held early Saturday morning, was against the Ajax Knights.  NobleKing posted an impressive 6-2 win in this “battle of the Knights” as Dimitroff and Robinson each notched another pair of goals.
Defencemen Vincent Albanese and Anthony Macedo rounded out the scoring. Despite beautiful goals by De Rose and Macedo, the long nine-hour break between games proved to hurt the Knights as they fell to the Nickel City Warriors in a 4-2 loss on Saturday evening. This left the team with an impressive 3-1 record, good enough for second place after the round robin.
The semi-finals saw the Knights again facing West Hill with an early morning Sunday start.
Both teams battled through three tough periods, but thanks to yet another goal from Graziosi, hat trick from Dimitroff, and especially strong defensive play from Liam McPhillips and Lorenzo Rossi, NobleKing was able to earn a spot in the finals with a 4-2 win.
The championship game Sunday afternoon saw the Knights battle Owen Sound, a strong team that had gone undefeated throughout the tournament.
The first period proved to be a defensive and goaltending battle, but the young Knights led by a slim 1-0 score after the first 10 minutes of play. They were able to add two more goals in the second period to take a 3-0 lead going into the third, thanks to Dimitroff’s natural hat trick.
Numerous penalties called against NobleKing threatened to place their lead in jeopardy as Owen Sound finally scored on a power play mid-way through the third period.  The young Knights were relentless in keeping the puck deep in their opponents’ zone and Robinson and Macedo were able to net additional goals to help NobleKing atom A end their season with an impressive 5-1 win as Champions of the Spring Thaw tournament.
The team would like to thank sponsors, Selba Kitchens & Baths, McPhillips & Associates Wealth Management, Seneca College, CST-Arwin, Aspen Ridge Homes, Evolution Wines and Mi5 Print & Digital Communications Inc., for their generous support this season.
All of the players would like to thank their families for their support and especially their wonderful coaches – Rob De Rose, Dan Dimitroff, Joseph Petrungaro, Brent Robinson and Tory Termini, for all of their hard work and dedication this past season.
