Schomberg teams in some big playoff battles

By Jeff Doner
With playoff season in full swing, Schomberg Minor Hockey still has some teams in the midst of some big battles.
Two teams are currently representing the Red Wings in the OMHA championships. The juveniles kicked off their series against the Beverly Bandits on Friday night on the road and were served a 2-0 loss.
Game two came back to Schomberg on Saturday afternoon, where a strong local crowd came out to cheer them on.
The Bandits created a number of scoring chances early in the game and eventually capitalized on one to take a 1-0 advantage.
Soon after, with a lot of traffic in front of the Red Wings netminder, a low point shot made its way through to put Beverly up 2-0.
From then on the Red Wings showed some desperation in trying to get on the scoreboard. One shot went off the cross bar in the final five minutes of the game.
With time ticking down, the Red Wings eventually broke Beverly's shutout streak to cut the score in half to 2-1.
The goal came on the power play with 2:24 left by Calvin McHugh and was assisted by Joey Borsa.
Borsa made a nice cross-ice pass to McHugh who was sitting in the perfect spot on the other side of the net.
But time wasn't on the Red Wings' side as the buzzer rang with a 2-1 final for Beverly.
With their backs now against the wall, the Red Wings will head back to Beverly on Friday night for game three. If they win, game four will be at the Trisan Centre on Saturday night at 9 p.m.

Peewee Rep Red Wings

After two games the peewee rep squad has also found themselves in a do or die situation in the OMHA finals against Mitchell.
Game one in Schomberg on Saturday saw the Red Wings down 2-1 at the end of the first period. Captain Cameron Kokelj scored Schomberg's first period goal from Dylan DiGirolamo.
Then with two second period goals, the Red Wings found themselves up with a 3-2 lead heading into the final frame.
Tying the score was Stuart Barber from Ethan McNaughton and Luciano Panezutti and McNaughton scored the go-ahead goal at the end of the second from Kokelj.
However, Mitchell refused to go away and came out with a hard-fought third period with two goals to hand the Red Wings a 4-3 loss.
The series then went back to Mitchell for game two, but the Red Wings were sent home with a 4-1 loss and down two games to none in the series.
Stuart Barber scored the lone Schomberg goal, assisted by McNaughton and Kokelj.
A must-win game three will take place at the Trisan Centre in Schomberg on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
