Villanova students sing anthems at ACC

March 11, 2014   ·   0 Comments

On Friday, March 7, 44 students from Villanova College in King City honoured their school by singing the anthems at the Air Canada Centre for the Toronto Raptors game. Looking sharp in school uniforms, the choir of students from Grades 5 through 12 performed the Canadian and American national anthems for tens of thousands in the stadium – their biggest audience yet!
Heartily cheered on by over a hundred of their own fans from the Villanova community, they sang with confidence and roused the audience to uproarious applause. Their success that evening was rivalled only by the Raptors themselves, who stayed steadily ahead of the Sacramento Kings, and ultimately beat their opponents 99-87.
Back in the fall, the Villanova Music Department was contacted by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment about submitting audition tracks for the chance to perform live at a Raptors game. Wasting no time, the choirs quickly submitted their recordings and soon found themselves buying tickets for the big night.
The choir, comprised of singers from the school’s senior choir, boys’ choir, and VC Voices, is no stranger to the big stage. Many of these singers perform annually at the Conference of Independent Schools Music Festival, the Ontario Vocal Festival, and the York Region Music Alive Festival, even competing at the Nationals in Toronto last May.
These same students regularly perform at the school’s liturgical services and masses, music concerts, and musical theatre performances. The school musical this year is Oliver! and will run May 22-23 at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts.
