The NobleKing Knights peewee A team kicked off their round-robin play last week with a four-game series against Richmond Hill and Innisfil.
In a bid to secure a good seed for the playoffs, the Knights hoped to win both games in the week.
They lost their first game against Richmond Hill, but bounced back against the Innisfil Winterhawks with a 4-1 win on Saturday afternoon at the Nobleton arena.
“We’ve had a good series with these guys through the season with some really close games,” said head coach Curtis Vickers.
“I thought it was probably one of our best games of the whole year. I asked them, ‘who here blocked a shot today?’ and pretty well all of them put up their hand and it’s a tough game and tough to get in front of those shots, but they did great, committed to defence, worked hard the whole game and capitalized on our opportunities.”
The Knights started the game down 4-1 after the Winterhawks scored early in the first, but the Knights buckled down and picked up the pace for the final two periods.
Right off the bat in the second, the Knights were trying desperately to tie the game.
Eventually, with four minutes remaining in the second, captain Anthony Arnone finally potted the equalizer.
Minutes later, Carson Moyer saw an opening while killing a penalty and scored a shorthanded goal to give the Knights a 2-1 lead.
The third period saw plenty of back and forth action, but it was again the Knights who capitalized on chances to score.
After some hard work around the net, Moyer made it 3-1 for the Knights with three minutes left.
Moyer also added an empty netter in the final seconds of the game to give him a hat trick and deliver the Knights a 4-1 win.
“I think it was really good. We played our hearts out, played good defence and blocked a lot of shots. Our goalie was amazing, so that was great too,” he said. “The key was blocking shots; we got it out of our zone a lot of the time. We struggled there a little bit, but overall we got the puck out.”
Heading into game two on Thursday night up in Innisfil, Moyer said it feels good to have the momentum.
“That was a huge game we won,” he said. “In the regular season they were pretty good, but that game, even when we were down one, we still got up and we now we are pumped for the rest of the games.”
The Knights will take to the road for game two against the Winterhawks on Thursday night. For more information, visit www.noblekinghockey.com.
