The Villanova College senior boys hockey team got their season off to a good start by defeating St. Andrews College 5 – 1 at the Sports Village arena in Vaughan last week.
It was the season opener for both squads in the Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association season.
Early on, both teams were looking to get off to a good start, but it was the Knights that seemed to have the early edge in the game with Daniel Carestia getting his team on the scoreboard first. Shortly after, Jordan Espirito – Santo buried one to make it 2 – 0 for the Knights.
St. Andrew’s forward Matt Iwai would cut the Villanova lead in half, scoring with 2:40 remaining in the period to make it 2 – 1.
But from the second period on, it was all Villanova as Carestia added two more for the hat trick and David Miakawa scored in the third period to claim a 5 – 1 win.
Jacob Tersigni stood tall in net for the Knights, making a few big saves throughout the game.
