Cara Tiemens to play basketball for Ryerson Rams

Cara Tiemens is perfectly at home on the basketball court.
This talented student-athlete from Newmarket is in Grade 12 at The Country Day School and has been playing basketball since she was six. She first distinguished herself on the court during her first year at CDS, and has continued to do so for the past seven years – winning the MVP award every year since Grade 6, and Athlete of the Year in Grade 10.
“This last season has been really emotional for me – and for our team,” she says. Cara was off for two weeks this season with an injury, and came back in time for the final game of the CAIS Championships in November. In the second period she took two would-be fouls, which locked up her Achilles heel and ended up sitting out for the third and some of the fourth periods, while CDS teacher and coach, Pete Milonas, taped up her leg. This sideline fix allowed her to rejoin the team – to the delight of the crowd.
CDS was down by six points. “We tied it up quickly, the game going back and forth, but in the end we lost by one. It was emotional, but not just because we lost (49-48 to St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn). Many of us had been playing together since Grade 6 and we were sad that this was our last game together.”
For the second year running Cara is playing on the Junior Women’s Elite League (JUEL) Scarborough Blues basketball team and in 2012 they won the Summer Games. JUEL is Canada’s only provincial league with the objective of providing an optimal environment for the development of elite junior female basketball players in Ontario. This league is regularly used by Canadian and U.S. colleges and universities to recruit players.
Last summer, Cara trained with the Ryerson Junior Rams team. She is currently listed on the 2013 Hooptown GTA’s Fab 45, a listing of the top female basketball players in the GTA and another source scouts use to identify top talent.
According to her basketball coach, Catie Ferguson: “Cara’s intense focus, combined with her raw talent, will be invaluable as she pursues basketball at the university level.”
While Cara has been scouted by multiple universities in the U.S. and Canada, she signed a letter of intent with Ryerson University and will be playing with the Ryerson Rams next year.
