Team Gerrits steals for a tie in curling By Shellee Morning The Young Bucks are back! Brothers Tim and Colin Gerrits, along with long- time friend Andrew Welch, have returned to Monday Night Men's curling after work related commitments kept them from the opening games this season. The sharp-shooting trio have recruited a new member to occupy Lead position this season with the arrival of Graeme Fleming. Fleming steps into the hack as a brand new curler to the sport with keen enthusiasm as well as a flare for humour to his personality, a perfect fit to complete the Gerrits Squad. With no experience at throwing stones or understanding the dynamics of the curl, the boys played on the shuffle board all weekend, so Fleming would have an idea as to what to expect for their first game. As they say, “practice makes perfect” and that's exactly what the boys did leading up to their season opener. Arriving for their first game, Fleming thought he was ready to put his new curling knowledge to work, while Welch and the Gerrits brothers predicted a game of re-acquainting themselves on the ice. Sheet two hosted the event for Team Gerrits against veteran curler Skip Karl Davis and his team of Steve Broad, Gary Boose and Joe Burnato, who happen to reside in 2nd place overall. As usual, the Young Bucks were calm and cool and seemed totally at ease with the job at hand. After 2 ends, the game was tied at one a piece. Rookie Graeme Fleming settled naturally into Lead spot throwing great weight for his first game ever. As the game went through each end, the score board reflected the tight broom for broom contest. The 6th end posed a bit of trouble for Skip Gerrits as Davis controlled the house and collected 3 with only 2 remaining ends. Never fear, the Young Bucks got back in gear to find 2 more in the 7th and sit back one point as they headed into the final end. As tension began to surface through the Davis crew, the young ones seemed to find ease with their brooms setting up the house for a possible steal. With last rocks to go for both teams, it seemed likely that Davis had a shot for the win but a miss would leave the game tied as Gerrits had one nestled nicely in counting position. The clock ticked loudly as the shots were considered and the sheets of King were nearing the final moments of a well- played match by all. Team Gerrits had the rings crowded so tight with their rocks, it was virtually impossible for Davis to sneak through and seal his win. The Young Bucks stole one to tie and earned themselves a very rewarding opening game performance. For Fleming, it felt like winning the Brier for his curling debut and fine execution of style. With their late start to the season, we are sure that Team Gerrits will no doubt become a team of force and |
