Streak ends, but Cougars still rack up points

The Schomberg Cougars had their six-game win streak snapped, but managed to capture three of a possible six points in some tough games last week.
It started with a home tilt against the first place Caledon Golden Hawks that was decided by a thrilling shootout on Thursday night. The game also had its fair share of rough play, mostly after the whistle.
The Golden Hawks would strike first in this game and would hold on to their 1-0 lead to end the period.
Mid-way through the second, Cailean Thornton-Wilson potted his second goal of the season to tie things up. On the play, defenceman Nicholas Chaykowsky worked hard to keep the puck in the Caledon zone, which eventually made its way to Thornton-Wilson who was parked at the side of the net. Ryley Egerton drew the assist on the goal.
With the score tied at one, play went back and forth with the Cougars being stymied by Caledon goalie, Eric Pitcher, throughout.
Caledon would add a power play goal to retake the lead. Shortly thereafter, a parade to the penalty box for both teams dominated the second period, with a slew of fighting majors, game misconducts and minor penalties given out.
The Cougars came out in the third period with lots of pep, but Pitcher stood tall and turned away the Schomberg advances until Mitch Safaric finally tied the game on the power play with less than seven minutes left. Brandon Yorke and Chris Wilson assisted on the goal.
With neither team able to capture a lead the game was sent into sudden death overtime and then the shootout. Thornton-Wilson scored on Schomberg’s first attempt, but Pitcher then turned away John Gage, Yorke and Kiefer McIntosh, delivering a 3-2 win to Caledon.
“I feel we deserved a bit better of an outcome than that,” said Gage after the game. “We battled hard in the third and took it to them and unfortunately we just didn’t get the bounces and we hit some posts … what can you do? They came out on top.”

Cougars double Erin

Looking to shake off their first loss in six games, the Cougars visited Erin on Saturday night.
It wasn’t a good start for the Cougars, who allowed the Shamrocks to get out to a 2-0 lead.
“The game in Erin started off really slow,” said Cougars head coach, Jim Egerton. “The ice was really bad and the game was slow, but we finally picked it up in the second and the third and took the game over. I think we doubled them in shots.”
Before the second period concluded, Mike Barosso scored to bring the Cougars within one goal.
In the third, the Cougars cranked things up a notch scoring five goals to take a commanding lead over Erin. Justin Formenton, Bobby Quinn, Brandon Falsarella, Blake Culley and Christian Muenz each connected in the third to cap a 6-3 win.
Garett Taylor backstopped the Cougars stopping 18 of 21 shots.

Loss at Caledon

The next day the Cougars visited Caledon for a rematch, but were sent home with a 5-3 loss.
“Last night in Caledon we outshot them and their goalie played really good again,” he said. “We had our chances and just couldn’t put it in and there were a couple calls that could have gone our way that didn’t, but they played well and it was a good game.”
For the most part it was a high paced game that saw both teams put over 40 shots on net.
Down 2-0 in the first period, Chaykowsky scored his seventh goal in 11 games for the Cougars to make it 2-1.
Egerton said the 6 foot 2 defenceman has been an important piece to the team so far this year.
“He’s a very modest kid that knows the game and competes hard,” he said. “Chaykowsky and Formenton have been really good. Formenton for his size has tons of skill and every night it seems like he does something different.”
With the score still close heading into the second period, Egerton said Caledon took all the momentum when they scored an early shorthanded goal to give them a 3-1 lead. After two periods of play, the Cougars found themselves down 4-2.
Mike Barosso scored for the Cougars in the third, but it wasn’t enough, as Caledon sent the Cougars home with a 5-3 loss.
“They scored a couple of nice goals, including the shorthanded one, which kind of broke our backs,” he said. “We were fooling around with the puck at the blue line and then they went down on a 2-on-1 and scored on a beautiful shot. I’m not going to complain. The guys played well enough to win the game.”
Coming off a six-game win streak, the Cougars were still able to collect three of six points last week and are still near the top of their division in points.
Their only game next week will be at home against Fergus, who the Cougars defeated 6-2 earlier in the season.
“We’ve just got to stay out of the box. They’re a physical team and we just have to stay out of the box and play our game,” Egerton said about their upcoming game.
