Roughly two dozen people were out in the Dufferin Marsh in Schomberg on Saturday night to enjoy a bonfire, some snacks, take a look at the moon and stars through a telescope. They were there to take part in the annual Earth Hour event.
It was the fifth year for the event that is organized by the Dufferin Marsh Committee.
“It’s just an opportunity to come out at night, for kids to do marshmallows and think about our place in the world,” said membership secretary Mary Asselstine.
“I think Earth Hour is really just about awareness of environmental issues and it’s about solidarity around the whole world. All the people that are interested in the environment are all out there tonight from 8:30 to 9:30 and recognizing environmental issues and being in solidarity with each other. You don’t have a lot of opportunities for families to come out here at night and it’s a whole different world out here.”
Mandy Brodie has brought her young daughter out to the event for the past couple years.
“I wanted to bring her out and be with the community a bit for a bit of simple fun,” she said. “She might be a little young now to understand earth hour, but I’m hoping to make this a tradition so she’ll always remember it.”
